The Woes of Streaming African Videos
A while back we decided to add a video app to one of the offerings on Afriville. It proved very popular and is now one of the most visited part of our social networking experience.
The video app can be found at Afriville Videos. Due to all that streaming we have learnt the hard way that video streaming doesn't go well with bandwidth quotas. On that front you'll notice if you use our site regularly that things are a little bit faster as we've undergone a server upgrade.
I've had several emails from people about not being able to watch the videos under dial up connnections. The thing is the video files being as big as they are viewing in dial up mode really is restrictive. To cater for those users, as we do recognize that a large number of users may not have access to broadband afterall This is Africa, we're working on having a dedicated streaming server, what this means is that our server will be able to tell how fast your connection is and deliver the videos at a speed appropiate for you, there by delivering the best experience.
We hope you enjoy using our video app and look forward to your suggestions and feedback..

How we got to where we are today!
I thought I'd give some background on how Afriville became Afriville and an insight into where Afriville "might" be going from here.
Afriville started life out as Caramellounge, till today some still never forgive the name change, which we still own the domain for by the way. Anyways Afriville encompassed better what we stood for. When Caramellounge as it was then called started out, it was a plain social network. The type you come in search for people add them as friends, join groups, chat leave wall messages etc. One might say though why another social network, well it all started out with two bored guys on a lonely New Years Eve.
Thats right New Years Eve, in front of the computer how saaad. Anyways one thing lead to the other Caramellounge was created, Social networking was the core. If you check the site now you'll see that we havent really kept up with that. But it'll be back. So thats pretty much the history.
Fast forward to today, we have a forum built in, a video streaming / sharing service (Check out my video on the right - Even youtube can't boast our One-Click Add to Blogger buttons), a service to promote and sort african blogs (if u have enough blogs to read you can never get bored) etc etc. But thats not all we've only just began, there's a few projects we have that have stalled that some people still have access to because we only removed the links - you never know they might come back and many more ideas which am obviously not going to go into.
In the future expect to see a lot more from Afriville;
In the past we had
Music
Artist Profile
Jukebox
Events Promotion
All of which will come back better stronger and more robust..
